Beth Israel nurse dies after being hit by a car while training for the Boston Marathon
Amanda Russell was running along Winter Street in Hanson on December 23, training for the 2016 Boston Marathon, when she was hit by a car. She died earlier this week from her injuries, The Patriot Ledger reports.
The 32-year-old was a labor and delivery nurse at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and was fundraising for the hospital’s 2016 marathon team, according to the Patriot Ledger.
On her fundraising page for the race, Russell said she was excited to run to support the staff, families, and babies she worked with at the hospital.
“Every shift I come to work on Labor and Delivery and help new life come into this world,’’ she wrote on the page. “Each patient I work with touches my life one way or another, and it truly is a miracle every time. It never crossed my mind working on Farr 2 that I would be faced with the scariest of situations on Labor and Delivery. Throughout my career I have witnessed codes, and brushes with death in the sickest of patients. But something makes it different when it is a tiny new life in your hands.’’
The hospital’s former CEO, Paul Levy, mourned Russell in a blog post on Tuesday. He included photos of sunrises Russell took. She posted them “almost daily,’’ he said, with the label #bidmcsunrise.
“All who knew Amanda were struck by her good nature and generosity,’’ he wrote. “She inspired her colleagues to take on new challenges, to develop personally and professionally. She was a loyal friend. Working in the most optimistic part of our hospital, she saw and delivered joy.’’
On Facebook, Nancy Harwood Eaton said she would be running the Boston Marathon in Russell’s memory.
