Two women charged for hoax story about baby thrown into Merrimack River
Massachusetts State Police and the Haverhill Police Department have determined that a report of a baby being thrown into the Merrimack River on Thursday night was a hoax.
A mother and daughter pair now face charges for fabricating the story and misleading a police investigation, The Boston Globe reports. Holly Fowler, 42, and Kristine Fowler, 23, are due to appear in Haverhill District Court on Monday.
A range of local authorities, including state police, Haverhill Police, and firefighters, rushed to the Comeau Bridge in Haverhill on Thursday night after hearing of the incident. According to the Globe, a State Police dive team was on scene, and authorities on a raft searched the dark waters with a flashlight.
The search was abandoned and determined to be a hoax after a few hours of searching.
