Man and woman from Vermont arrested in Bernardston on heroin trafficking charges

A man and woman are facing charges, including trafficking heroin and conspiracy to violate drug law, after a traffic stop in Bernardston.

The two Vermont residents were arrested by Massachusetts State Police Tuesday evening, according to a police statement.

Police said Alexander Dewey, 41, and Lauren Luker, 34, both of South Burlington, Vermont, were pulled over by a trooper on Route 91 for a “defective plate light.’’ The trooper discovered Dewey, who was driving, did not have a license, and a further investigation found 15 bundles of what police believed to be heroin inside the car, according to police.

The pair was arraigned Tuesday at Greenfield District Court where they pleaded innocent to the charges, according to The Greenfield Recorder.

Bail was set at $10,000 cash or $100,000 surety for Dewey and $5,000 cash or $50,000 surety for Luker.

Calls made to the attorneys Alex Nappan, representing Dewey, and Byron Caplice, representing Luker, were not immediately returned.
