MBTA Red Line train reads ‘$$$$$$$$$’ in ironic technical issue

With the MBTA’s fiscal board considering raising fares by up to 10 percent, the T’s cost has been at the forefront of riders’ minds recently.

Money appears to be on the mind of this Red Line train, too.

Jessica Saint Jean spotted the train — with listed destination “$$$$$$$$$’’ — in Davis Square at around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday. (The train was actually headed inbound to Ashmont.)

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the train operator is not able to change the LED signs.

“It is a technical issue, not a human one,’’ he said.

In a series of Twitter messages, Saint Jean said the sign was “definitely ironic,’’ especially considering the recent information on how much MBTA employees were paid.

“You’d think that maybe their signs should default to maybe ‘*****’ or something when glitching,’’ she said.
