Pharmacy delivery van theft is on the rise

There were 87 incidents this year, up from 72 last year.

The theft of pharmacy delivery vans is on the rise amid a nationwide opioid addiction crisis, reports Stat.

There were 87 incidents this year, up from 72 last year, according to Stat. The vans are usually driven by unarmed couriers with little security training. The stolen drugs can sell on the street for more than 100 times the retail price. Police told Stat that a theft in Alabama in May included pain pills worth up to $66,000 on the street.

The surveillance video below shows a pharmaceutical delivery van robbery that took place in Florida in January.

“We still have a segment of criminals that very much want to get their hands on those pills because they have high street value,’’ Captain Gregg Rector of the Hoover, Ala. police department, told Stat. “People are willing to go to extreme means to get those pills.’’
