Girl, 8, left home alone during Milton house fire

“She stated that she was left alone by her parents while they were at the store.’’

An 8-year-old girl was left home alone when her Milton house went up in flames, said Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Finerty of the Milton Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the 3-alarm fire at 4 p.m. Thursday.

“When we pulled up, the little girl was outside of the house standing with a neighbor,’’ said Finerty. “She stated that she was left alone by her parents while they were at the store.’’

The “very intense’’ fire began in the first-floor kitchen of the two-family home on Hudson Street, said Finerty.

“She was safe,’’ said Finerty about the little girl. “She had the presence of mind to get out of there, thank God.’’

A woman who lived on the second floor was also able to escape, said Finerty.

The fire spread out from the kitchen to the back deck and then up to the second floor, he said. One firefighter was injured in the blaze, but is expected to be OK, said Finerty.

Firefighters were on the scene until 8 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
