Earlier this month, Officer Mike Kotsonis was dispatched to a call concerning an unidentified woman who had stolen cake mix, Crisco, and frosting from a Portsmouth Ocean State Job Lot. He learned that the woman had hoped to make her child a birthday cake—and he paid for the ingredients, Seacoastonline.com reported.

Now the site is reporting that Kotsonis has since received about $1,000 worth of gifts for the woman’s family, everything from letters along with fruitcake, cash that Kotsonis converted into gift cards, and gift cards for supermarkets, Toys R Us, Walmart, and more.

“There’s been an outpouring of generosity, nationally,’’ Kotsonis told Seacoastonline.com. “People have called and talked to me and they want to make sure it gets to the proper location. I can say that it is going to put smiles on a couple of kids’ faces this Christmas. It is being put to good use.’’

Many of the letters praised Kotsonis’s actions, as well. Kotsonis originally wanted to keep his goodwill anonymous. A store employee reported it to news outlet.

Kotsonis’s act has also spurred another trend: nicknames from his coworkers. According to Seacoastonline.com, they’ve started dubbing him “Betty Crocker,’’ and “Cakesonis.’’
