MFA-featured artist from India found dead in cardboard box
Officials in India are investigating the brutal killing of acclaimed artist Hema Upadhyay, whose work depicting Mumbai’s bustling life is set to be featured at the Museum of Fine Arts next year.
The bodies of Upadhyay and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani were found in cardboard boxes over the weekend, CNN reports. Their hands and legs were bound and their bodies tightly wrapped in plastic sheets, area police said. The case is being investigated as a murder.
Upadhyay worked prominently in mixed media, and was renowned for her depictions of Mumbai’s shantytowns and migrant life.

Hema Upadhyay’s installation, “Where the bees suck, there suck I.’’
Upahdyay’s art will be part of the MFA’s upcoming “Megacities Asia’’ exhibition, which is scheduled to run from April to June 2016.
“From the endless stream of migrants in densely packed Mumbai, to the bicycles that until recently filled the streets of Beijing, works by Hema Upadhyay and Ai Weiwei evoke the constant motion that characterizes emerging megacities,’’ the MFA writes.
In a Facebook post, the MFA said they were “shocked and saddened’’ by her death.
“Today we mourn the loss of an especially talented artist, Hema Upadhyay,’’ said Al Miner, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and co-curator of the exhibit. “Hema’s captivating work reflected not only her unique creative vision, but also her deeply felt compassion for the vulnerable communities around her. I’ll miss her generous spirit, intelligence, warmth, and energy.’’
