The owners of Nick’s Famous Roast Beef in Beverly, along with the wife of one of the owners, have been federally charged in an indictment for allegedly cheating on their taxes, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Owners Nicholas Markos, 69, of Lynn, and Nicholas Koudanis, 65, of Topsfield, along with Koudanis’s wife, 60-year-old Eleni Koudanis, are accused of not reporting almost $6 million in cash receipts from their business over six years. As a result, the owners avoided paying nearly $1 million each in personal income taxes from 2008 to 2013, according to authorities.

In the indictment, unsealed Monday, the three individuals were charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States by obstructing the IRS and 10 counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of false tax returns, authorities said.

Steven Koudanis, 39, the son of Nicholas and Eleni, was also charged with endeavoring to obstruct and impede the due administration of the Internal Revenue Laws, according to authorities.

The well-known roast beef restaurant only accepts cash payments, and authorities said the owners had employees, including Steven Koudanis, create false receipts for an IRS audit and destroy the actual ones.

According to authorities, Nicholas and ElenI Koudanis amassed more than $1.6 million in cash, which they kept in a safe in their home.

When reached by phone Monday, a restaurant employee said no one was available to comment on the allegations.
