These warm temperatures are giving New England ski areas the blues

A strong El Niño weather system means snow making and open trails are limited.

Wachusett Mountain expects to have up to four ski trails open Saturday, despite the sparse snow on Thursday. Matthew Healey for The Boston Globe

A strong El Niño weather system, the first in nearly two decades, is bringing warmer temperatures than usual to New England, reports The Boston Globe.

For skiers, the warm weather is proving to be a problem on the slopes, putting a damper on early-season snowmaking and limiting the amount of trails open, reports the Globe.

“All of this stuff does not bode well as far as getting some good December skiing — especially for the places that are really dependent on natural snow,’’ Josh Fox, author of “The Single Chair Weather Blog,’’ told the Globe .

Ski areas such as Mad River Glen in Vermont are eager for snow as we approach the December holidays. Mad River Glen usually does up to 20 percent of its annual business during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, reports the Globe.
