“There was a reason behind Bruce’s constant smile—he was doing something he loved and that was always evident,’’ Ventura wrote. “Even on the rare days when things didn’t go his way, the anger would quickly subside and you could bet the legendary Lerch laughter was right around the corner.’’
Lerch, 42, joined the Herald 10 years ago to cover high school sports. He was diagnosed with cancer in late October, and passed away Sunday, the Herald reported.
Lerch was a well-known face at local games, and many of the student atheletes he covered reached out with their support to him and his family.

“He was the ultimate in unselfishness, a trait that endeared him to so many,’’ Ventura wrote. “It’s sad to lose a co-worker, sadder still to have lost a friend.’’
