Cambridge Police believe threats to schools were made by a student upset over homework

Police are maintaining a presence in Cambridge schools this week.

Cambridge Police believe a disgruntled student may be behind the three anonymous threats made to the school district last week.

The person referenced homework in some of the email threats, writing, “There’s just too much homework that’s been assigned,’’ said Jeremy Warnick, spokesperson for the Cambridge Police Department.

Last Tuesday, the person made a bomb threat to a Cambridge middle school. On Thursday and Friday, a threat of “gun violence’’ at the middle schools was made and specific schools such as the Amigos School, Putnam Avenue Upper School, and Vassal Lane Upper School were mentioned.

Police are maintaining a presence in Cambridge schools this week, said Warnick. However, “We have confidence that [the threats] are not legitimate,’’ he said.

The police and FBI are working to identify the person, who used encryption software to hide his or her identity.

“It has not been a person identified at this point, but we’re getting closer to that,’’ said Warnick. “It appears to be a student in the district.’’

That person could face federal and state charges, he said.

Warnick said there have been no threats this week.

“We’re going to take this day by day and continue to focus our energies to resolve the investigation and ensure that people feel that sense of safety and security,’’ Warnick said.
