Donald Trump hires former Baker-Polito advisor as Massachusetts campaign director
Donald Trump is starting to build his Massachusetts team.
Dean Cavaretta, a former advisor on the 2014 Charlie Baker-Karyn Polito gubernatorial campaign, will serve as the Trump’s state director in Massachusetts, the campaign announced Monday.
“I love Massachusetts and have many great friends there, with a recent poll showing me in first place with 48%,’’ Trump said in a statement, which mentioned he had held three events in the state.
Cavaretta, an Acton native, told Boston.com the position was “a unique opportunity with a unique candidate.’’
Asked about Trump’s calls Monday to ban Muslims from entering the United States, Cavaretta said he had no comment.
“I’ll let the campaign speak for that,’’ Cavaretta said, adding that terrorism was the larger issue at hand.
The Trump campaign’s statement Monday twice noted an Emerson College poll in October that found 48 percent of Massachusetts Republicans said they would vote for Trump — nearly triple the support of any other primary candidate.
Cavaretta said he thinks Trump’s appeal in the Bay State is because he comes off as “genuine and original.’’
According to his website, Cavaretta was the deputy campaign manager for Polito’s 2010 run for state treasurer and a special assistant on successful 2014 Baker-Polito bid. Cavaretta himself ran for the Middlesex and Worcester state Senate seat in 2012, but lost to Democratic incumbent Jamie Eldridge by a 65 to 35 margin.
Before entering politics, Cavaretta worked in state government focusing on transportation infrastructure.
