New arrest made in Bridgewater burned body case
Police have arrested a man they say misled officers investigating a burned body found by railroad tracks in Bridgewater last month.
Bridgewater police arrested Ovi Cruz, 30, of Randolph, and charged him with misleading a police investigation into the death of Ashley Bortner, who was found burnt on the side of MBTA train tracks last month, The Boston Globe reports. Police also have an arrest warrant for Boston man Fernando Owens, who exchanged 13 calls with Bortner the night she died.
According to the Globe, Cruz told investigators he did not know Owens very well, but spoke to him once. Police say cell phone records show Cruz placed multiple calls to Owens on the day Bortner was found dead, wrapped in a comforter, hands and feet bound behind her back with electrical cord.
Cruz’s bail was set at $5,040, the Globe reports. He is due to be arraigned at Brockton District Court Monday.
The District Attorney’s office did not immediately return request for comment. No information on Cruz’s lawyer was immediately available.
