Boston Police won’t allow backlash against Muslims, says Commissioner Evans
Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans assured Boston’s Muslim population that the department would not permit backlash against the community in the wake of the San Bernardino mass shooting.
Evans met Friday with interfaith leaders at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center to assure hundreds of Muslims present that police would remain vigilant against targeted attacks, The Boston Globe reports. He also requested that Muslims report any leads on potential crime.
The meeting followed the mass shooting in San Bernardino, where a Muslim couple killed 14 people, and attacks by Islamic extremists in Paris which left 130 dead.
According to the Globe, Evans was greeted with applause, but some in the crowd expressed frustration with being labeled as a violent group, despite the country’s uniquely high rate of gun violence, and are disgusted with Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s xenophobic remarks.
