Cambridge schools receive third threat this week
“We are more confident that it is the same person responsible for this.’’
Cambridge Public Schools are under threat for the third time this week.
Parents have been notified of the latest email threat of gun violence and police officers are present in all Cambridge public school buildings Friday, said Jeremy Warnick, spokesperson for the Cambridge Police Department.
Police are still investigating the source of the emails. Police notified Cambridge schools of the latest threat early Friday morning.
“We have yet to identify the individual at this point,’’ said Warnick. “We are more confident that it is the same person responsible for this.’’
Superintendent of Schools Jeff Young and Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas released a statement Friday, saying, “This is another threat of gun violence and it is directed at ‘cambridge mass middle schools.’’’
Cambridge public schools were the subject of a similar email threat of gun violence Thursday that included specific references to Amigos School, Putnam Avenue Upper School, and Vassal Lane Upper School.
“Once again, we are taking the threat seriously, proceeding with the utmost caution, and informing the public,’’ Young and Haas said in the statement.
The gun violence threats were followed by a bomb threat Tuesday, which was also delivered by anonymous email. The email said a bomb had been placed in a Cambridge middle school.
Teams from the police department and Cambridge Public Schools walked through all school buildings Friday at 6 a.m., said Warnick, and students could only enter and exit through the front doors of their schools. This plan was already in place for Friday after Thursday’s threat, he said.
Police are asking people to report suspicious activity to 911 or the Cambridge police at (617) 349-3300.
