Inside the ‘abysmally low’ number of women on corporate boards

Corporate board positions at publicly traded companies in Massachusetts are overwhelmingly white and male, according to an analysis by The Boston Globe.

The Globe obtained data on the demographics of 184 companies, and found that just 15 percent of directors were women. The numbers for people of color was even lower: Just 7 percent of company directors were black, Asian, Latino, Native American, or multiracial, the Globe found.

In all, 80 percent of board directors at Bay State companies were white men. On the whole, 36 percent of Massachusetts residents are white men.

“The statistics for Massachusetts are abysmally low,’’ said state Sen. Karen Spilka.
