Rhode Island police arrest a pregnant woman, after a car crash, for DUI

Rhode Island State Police notified the Department of Children, Youth & Families to protect the woman’s unborn child.

Rhode Island State Police say a mother-to-be was driving under the influence when she was involved in a car accident on Saturday.

Police responded to a report of a car accident at 11:25 p.m. in Providence. Taja Perry, 26, of Pawtucket, R.I., who is pregnant, was the driver of one of the vehicles in the crash and “showed signs of intoxication, and was taken into custody,’’ according to a statement by police.

Perry was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and/or drugs with a blood alcohol content of .15 or greater, possession of a controlled substance (Adderall), driving without a license, driving in possession of a controlled substance, and obstructing an officer.

Police notified the Department of Children, Youth & Families of Perry’s arrest to protect her unborn child.

Perry was released on personal recognizance and turned over to a responsible adult. She will be arraigned Dec. 1 at the Third Division District Court in Warwick, R.I.
