New emails reveal Hillary Clinton’s nickname for Mitt Romney
The State Department released a new batch of Hillary Clinton’s emails Monday afternoon, thus commencing the online frenzy of journalists searching for any important or humorous tidbits from the former secretary of state’s communications.
One email from January 22, 2012, revealed Clinton’s nickname for former Massachusetts governor and then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
“Mittens.’’
“If Mittens can’t beat Grinch [Newt Gingrich] in Florida, there will be pressure on state Republican parties to reopen or liberalize ballot access especially in the caucuses, which as we know are creatures of the parties’ extremes,’’ Clinton wrote to her longtime friend Sidney Blumenthal.
Just a few months earlier, a poll found that two percent of American adults thought “Mittens’’ was Romney’s real name.
Willard — Romney’s actual firstname — would, of course, go on to win the Republican primary, but lose the 2012 general election.
In another newly released email, Clinton’s senior advisor Philippe Reines posited a theory why Romney would lose.

“I think I’m on to something here,’’ Reines followed up. “Especially since the last three Presidents — the first baby boomers to reach the office — only had daughters.’’
