School kids decide this is New Hampshire’s dumbest law

Pat Greenhouse / The Boston Globe

A competition to find New Hampshire’s dumbest law has a winner.

Schools and colleges across the granite state were encouraged to nominate what they thought was the most ridiculous law governing the land. After almost a three month search, WMUR reports they have a winner: a town ordinance from the 1700s banning the collection of seaweed by night.

The contest was started by NH Representative Max Abramson as a response to the state government’s ridiculing of a fourth grade class’s proposal to make the red-tailed hawk the official state raptor.

“Instead of adding all these different bills, we thought why not have a contest to repeal some outdated laws in the books?’’ he said to WMUR.
