Firefighters rescue a dog from a highway culvert

Firefighters rescued two missing dogs — one along the highway and another trapped in a culvert — that belonged to the same family Saturday morning in Salem, New Hampshire.

The Salem Fire Department received a call from a neighboring fire department stating that a dog was stuck in the water just north of Exit 2 on I-93, near Canobie Lake, a Salem firefighter told Boston.com. Firefighters didn’t see a dog during an initial search of the area, but they did find one walking along the highway, picked her up, and returned her to the address on her tag.

When they got to the home listed, the owners told firefighters that they were also looking for their other dog, and that both had been missing since around 4 p.m. Friday. Authorities went back to the area around Exit 2 and heard a dog whimpering before spotting it trapped in the culvert.

The fire department called a rescue team who was able to pull the 11-month-old dog from the 40-foot-deep culvert, authorities said. Both dogs, who were cold but otherwise unhurt, have been returned to their owner, according to the fire department.
