Hillary Clinton’s Massachusetts alma mater is a microcosm of the primary race
A small group of Bernie Sanders supporters are bucking the trend against the ‘well-organized machine’ at Wellesley College.
On the campus of Hillary Clinton’s alma mater in Wellesley, the same dynamics of the 2016 race are playing out on a much smaller scale.
Politico’s Annie Karni reported Wednesday how an outnumbered group of Bernie Sanders fans are bucking the trend against the highly organized Clinton machine at Wellesley College — 46 years after the Democratic frontrunner graduated from the women’s liberal arts school, which now sells Clinton action figures in the bookstore.
“My dad thinks my support for Bernie is totally misguided because I go to Wellesley,’’ sophomore Claire Devlin told Politico. “He keeps saying it’s bad for the brand not to vote for Hillary, which I just think is the most absurd thing.’’
Another Sanders supporter said many Wellesley students are backing Clinton “because it will increase the value of [their] degree.’’
Sanders supporters at Wellesley still face a steep uphill battle.
Wellesley Students for Hillary — outfitted with “a five-person executive leadership committee, finance and organizing teams, a communications staff larger than most presidential campaigns,’’ and even a student historian — has already planned canvassing trips to New Hampshire, guest speakers, phone banks, and other fundraising events.
Even the founder of the Wellesley Students for Bernie Facebook page admits: “It’s legit.’’
