Local and state politicians are hoping to rebuild Lynn from a stagnant, former industrial town into a revitalized waterfront region that’s a stone’s throw from Boston, The Boston Globe reports.

Gov. Charlie Baker and Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Jay Ash are forming a new task force with one focus: Develop Lynn. The task force is “unusual’’ for its emphasis on one single city, the Globe notes. The plan has gained the interest of state and local officials, and U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton hired a staffer whose main job will be to examine and develop Lynn.

“Lynn is a 15-minute train ride from downtown Boston and yet it has a [significant amount] of vacant land,’’ Moulton told the Globe. “Few businesses going out of Boston and Cambridge look to Lynn, and I think they should.’’

Lynn has a population of about 90,000 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The city is well below the state average on a number of economic statistics, and its median household income of $45,000 is about two-thirds of the state average.
