How can Mass. drivers save money? By driving less

Joanne Rathe / The Boston Globe

Two Massachusetts environmental advocacy groups think there’s a simple way to minimize the impact of the state’s drivers: drive less.

A report released by Transportation for Massachusetts and Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group found that Bay State drivers could save a collective $2.3 billion annually by using their cars one percentage point less than they’re projected to: $857 million on gasoline, $785 million on crashes, and $446 million on car repairs, according to The Boston Globe. The savings are based on projected driving patterns for the next 15 years.

“We’re hoping that the Commonwealth takes this as an opportunity to make the kind of investments we really need,’’ said MassPIRG’s John Olivieri, one of the authors of the study.
