Homeless families across Massachusetts are raising their children in motels.

There are about 4,000 homeless families in Massachusetts and 1,156 are living in motels paid for by the state, according to a report by The Patriot-Ledger.

A report issued Wednesday by the state auditor says the host communities are collecting excise taxes from the motels, reports the Ledger. Between July and September, Weymouth was paid about $31,000 and Brockton was paid $58,578.

“Motels are not appropriate places for homeless families to be,’’ Weymouth Town Council President Patrick O’Connor told the Ledger. “Why is there not a permanent solution for these families? It’s really unfortunate that children have to grow up in this.’’
