Presidential candidate and Yale alum Ben Carson criticized the protests at his alma mater, calling them “infantile’’ and “un-American’’ during an interview on Fox News on Wednesday night.

Carson also said that he thought the protests were influenced by mysterious outside forces.

“This is just raw emotion, and people being manipulated, I think, in many of these cases by outside forces who wish to create disturbances,’’ he said.

Carson, one of the two leading Republican presidential candidates, also said this was evidence of politically correct culture going too far.

“We’re being a little bit too tolerant, accepting infantile behavior. I don’t care which side it comes from. To say that I have the right to violate your civil rights because you’re offending me is un-American. It is unconstitutional,’’ he said.

“It’s the same thing that happens before people get divorced: they stop talking,’’ Carson explained. “The next thing you know their spouse is the devil incarnate. That’s what’s going on.’’

The Yale protests sprang out of faculty members’ Halloween-related email that tried to downplay the negative effects of cultural insensitivity, saying that the free exchange of ideas was more important to protect. In another high-profile instance, some students alleged that a fraternity had turned away black women from a party and that only white girls were allowed to enter.

Protesters on campus have called for administrators to increase ethnic studies programs, provide mental health programs for minority students, and remove the Halloween email writers from their positions, according to the Yale Daily News.
