MBTA announces (actual) new train designs
The MBTA has unveiled the exterior designs for new cars on the Red, Orange, and Green lines, as selected by the public in an online survey.
For real, this time.
On Tuesday, the T announced the winning designs from the survey, launched last month. But the agency was quickly forced to call the results back because of apparent ballot stuffing for the Red and Green lines. Each line picked up more than 175,000 votes, compared to about 25,000 for the Orange Line, with the winners claiming about 90 percent of their respective tallies.
The T came back with what it says are the accurate outcomes Thursday afternoon.
“In order to get a more accurate measurement of voters’ opinions, the MBTA removed all responses seemingly generated by a computer program,’’ the agency said in a statement. “Because each of these responses were recorded in less than 10 seconds, the MBTA deemed the votes invalid and subsequently nullified the unreliable data. The MBTA regrets any confusion created by the previously announced results, and takes full responsibility for failing to properly monitor the survey responses. This will not happen again.’’
Asked whether the T had figured out why somebody would stuff the ballot, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo responded via email: “Too much time on his/her hands?’’
And the winners are…
Red Line (9,253 of 25,673 votes):

Tuesday’s false Red Line winner:

Green Line (13,001 of 25,564 votes):

Tuesday’s false Green Line winner:

Orange Line (10,545 of 25,473 votes):

The Orange Line stayed the same, and will just about match the Red Line.
