Man describes moment he hit moose in crash that critically injured fiancee

Frank Gatto remembers seeing something large emerge on the dark highway, but not having enough time to hit the brakes.

Gatto described the crash that critically injured his fiancee earlier this week to theThe Portland Press Herald.

When Gatto’s car struck a moose on the Maine Turnpike Wednesday, all he saw was its stomach and legs, he told the Press Herald. The impact tore the roof from the car and left Gatto’s fiancee, Taylor Norcross, 27, with severe brain injuries.

The moose did not survive the crash, according to the Press Herald. Gatto, however, walked away unscathed.

“I was sitting 6 inches away from her,’’ Gatto said. “I wonder why [I’m not injured]. I was driving and I can’t help but feel responsible, even though there was nothing I could do.’’
