Hingham spent $40,000 trying to track down the writer of an anonymous letter

A Hingham town employee has admitted to writing an anonymous letter that criticized Hingham police officers after officials spent $40,000 to identify its writer, according to CommonWealth magazine.

Matt Hersey, a heavy equipment operator for Hingham’s public works department, wrote a letter criticizing two candidates for police chief and sent it to members of the Board of Selectmen in April, CommonWealth reported. He claimed the candidates had missed shifts and violated other department policies, making them unfit for the position.

In the search to out the letter’s author, Hingham shelled out $40,000 to pay for private investigators and a company to identify a fingerprint on the letter’s envelope, according to CommonWealth. Much of the money came from the town’s budget for employee health insurance.
