Dina Rudick / The Boston Globe

Two Boston startups want to market their video games as treatments to mental illnesses.

Pear Therapeutics and Akili Interactive Labs say their games offer relief for patients suffering with illnesses from ADHD to autism,STAT reports.

Therapeutic gaming proponents claim well-designed games can help patients improve their multitasking, focus, and information-processing skills for the real world, STAT reports. Hundreds of patients are signing up for national clinical trails, but many doctors and scientists remain skeptical.

“We have a lot of findings, but none of them are specific enough right now to be clinically used,’’ Massachusetts General Hospital psychiatrist Dr. Gagan Joshi told STAT.
