Burlington just ‘re-tagged’ a mosque with positive messages

A vandalized mosque in Burlington held an inter-faith event to ‘re-tag’ the walls with messages of positivity and inclusivity.

The members of the Islamic Center of Burlington found their mosque covered in eggs and red spray-painted “USA’’ tags early Sunday morning, The Boston Globe reports. On Wednesday, religious leaders, politicians, and community members gathered at the holy building for an event called “We are Americans,’’ to reaffirm the Muslim community’s position in the local community.

At the ceremony, Massachusetts State Rep. Ken Gordon urged community members to follow the “Golden Rule,’’ and “treat others the way you want to be treated,’’ according to the Globe.

This isn’t the first time the Burlington mosque has been targeted, the Globereports. The community recounted several cases of vandalism and intimidation, including other spray-painting episodes. In another incident, a man wore his shirt like a headscarf outside the building during the month of Ramadan, said John Robbins, executive director of the Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
