“It must’ve gotten out of its pen or something. This is a rural community, so it happens,’’ said Granby Police Department’s Sergeant Kevin O’Grady. “We deal with escapees on a regular basis, whether they’re goats, or cows, or horses.’’

O’Grady told Boston.com, “The goat was in the road, so somebody called it in, then it ended up on a front lawn, and tried to go into somebody’s house. I don’t know if the [police cruiser] lights or cruiser attracted it, but it just jumped up and started licking the window until its owner arrived.’’

The Granby Goat joins the growing club of animals on the lam in New England. Most famously a goat in Lowell that became somewhat of an urban legend – it even got its own twitter handle – after escaping towards the end of December and remaining on the run for almost a month. Other members include the Newton Bear, and an escapee Emu in New Hampshire.

Luckily, the Granby Goat’s owner came to collect it the same night, O’Grady said.

“We keep a list of farmers in the area with their cell phone numbers so if we have a loose animal we just start calling and see who has a missing suspect,’’ he said.
