Being homeless on Cape Cod is far from a vacation

The bandstand on the Hyannis Village Green, where homeless people often sleep, offers a stark view of the Cape’s struggling residents in a tourist-centric town according to The Boston Globe.

Homelessness on Cape Cod has been an issue for decades fading in and out of public discussion, but after a visitor wrote a letter to the Cape Cod Times about it last summer, it’s gained more attention.

Ray Bastille was 57 years old the night he died on the Hyannis bandstand. He had been in and out of treatment and utilized some of the 72 social service organizations the town had to offer before his death.

Such services, including a shelter just two blocks off of Main Street, have come under fire for their proximity to the pleasant town that’s flooded with tourists every summer, says the Globe.
