The Yankees declined an opportunity to appear in ‘Spotlight’
In an early scene in Spotlight, the upcoming movie about The Boston Globe’s coverage of the sexual abuse that took place within the Catholic Church, the team of reporters attends a game at Fenway Park. The scene, which was originally slated to be shot at a Red-Sox Yankees game, had to be moved after the Yankees decided not to take part in the film, according to the Globe.
After going over the script, the Yankees said they’d rather not associate themselves with Spotlight’s subject matter, deeming it inappropriate for Major League Baseball to take on. The team even went as far as to suggest that the Red Sox follow their lead and exempt themselves from the film, the Globe reported.
But with Red Sox owner John Henry also owning the Globe, the connection was obvious and encouraged. The scene was instead filmed at a Red Sox-Rays game in September 2014, the Globe reported.
“I don’t think they gave the script proper consideration,’’ Tom McCarthy, Spotlight’s director, told the Globe. “I know a lot of good Yankees fans who will enjoy this movie.’’
