Drink ‘Liquid Damnation’ rum at Salem’s new gin and rum distillery
It’s the first distillery to open in Salem in more than 100 years
You can now drink handcrafted “Liquid Damnation’’ rum and “Original Gin’’ at a new distillery in Salem. Deacon Giles Distillery, the first distillery to open in Salem in more than 100 years, is named after an 1835 fictional story set in Salem about a Massachusetts man named Deacon Giles, according to the company’s website.
Founders Ian Hunter and Jesse Brenneman wrote on the company’s website that the story’s protagonist, Amos Giles, was “an impious man, distilling rum on the Sabbath, paying his employees with liquor and selling bibles from his counting room.’’
The story, called “The Dream, or, the True History of Deacon Giles’ Distillery,’’ was created by George B. Cheever, a young Salem minister and leader in the temperance and anti-slavery movements. Cheever was whipped in the street and convicted of libel for the story, which was thought to have lambasted a popular local businessman.
Hunter and Brenneman “wanted to roll up our sleeves and craft something exceptional using our own hands, uniquely infused with our personalities and steeped in history.’’
Located at 75 Canal St., the distillery is open for tastings and tours Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m.
