A student is suing Somerville to clear his name in a rape case

The family of a former Somerville High School student once accused of raping a boy at a school trip in the Berkshires has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Somerville.

Galileo Mondol was arrested in 2013 and faced a potential lifetime prison sentence on rape of a child charges,The Boston Globe reports. Mondol denied the allegations, and the Berkshire district attorney’s office dropped the charges in April. Now Mondol and his family are suing the city for $1 million, claiming Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone – an assistant football coach at the camp – was one of several officials who knew about past hazing incidents.

“The defendants conspired to conceal and cover up the hazing,’’ the complaint states, “because they understood that such conduct raised serious questions about their role in facilitating it and recklessly allowing it to occur.’’
