Massachusetts drivers are being duped by tampered odometers
The odometers have been rolled back on some 40,000 Massachusetts cars, says Carmax.
If you drive a used car, you should know that the odometers have been changed on some 40,000 cars in Massachusetts, according to a CBS Boston report.
“Something is going on in Massachusetts,’’ Chris Basso, a spokesperson for Carfax, a service that tracks the histories of millions of cars, told CBS Boston. “People are not looking out for it. They are being duped.’’
Drivers think digital odometers are difficult to change, which isn’t true, said Basso. Simple devices, available online, can plug into a car’s computer and roll back the number instantly, he said.
Virginia Hicks, of Dorchester, told CBS she was stunned to discover the 157,000 odometer reading on the car she bought in March actually showed 226,000 miles back in 2013, according the car’s service records.
