Bedford’s firefighters are old pros when it comes to delivering babies

Bedford’s firefighters are getting a lot of practice delivering babies.

The latest bundle of joy came on Thursday morning, when the department received a call saying a woman was going into labor at her place of work.

Firefighter John Perry and Patrick Stewart responded to the call. Five minutes after the firefighters arrived, the mother delivered her son, according to Chief of Fire David Grunes. Paramedics reported that both mom and baby were doing well upon arrival at Emerson Hospital in Concord.

This is Perry’s 15th delivery on the job, and Stewart’s 4th assist. The Bedford Fire Department has assisted with the delivery of three babies in the last 18 months, according to the department.

“As emergency responders, far too often we deal with unhappy situations and outcomes, so it is very uplifting for our firefighters to directly help bring a new life into the world,’’ Chief Grunes said.
