Students evacuated at Lexington elementary school after loud bang

There was no smoke or fire detected, said Lexington police.

Students at Estabrook Elementary School in Lexington were evacuated Thursday morning after hearing a loud noise and feeling the building shudder.

“They heard a bang and they felt a shake of some sort,’’ said Lieutenant Chris Barry of the Lexington Police Department.

The police were called at 9:01 a.m. and, shortly after, someone pulled a fire alarm in the school to evacuate students and staff, said Barry. There are no injuries.

Students were bused to Lexington High School’s athletic field house, where they will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. Lexington elementary schools are always dismissed at 12:15 p.m. on Thursdays, so they are not being released early, he said.

The Lexington Fire Department was on the scene and no smoke or fire was detected, Barry said. No other schools in the district were affected, he said. Officials are in contact with local utility companies.

“We are unable to determine anything at this time,’’ Barry said.
