Police took a replica gun that had been tampered with to resemble a real firearm from a 12-year-old boy in Roxbury Tuesday evening, according to Boston police.

Around 5:40 p.m., a citizen who had seen a boy put what appeared to be a gun into his backpack called police. Officers found the boy with a group of teenagers at Kensington Park and approached him to search his backpack.

After patting the bag and feeling an item in the shape of a gun, police recovered a replica firearm along with a can of black spray paint that had been used to paint the gun, police said. They also determined that the gun’s orange tip had been removed.

Officers identified the boy and called his mother, who came to the park to pick up her son. Police said they talked to the boy about the consequences of carrying a replica firearm, and gave the boy’s mother the number for her district’s community service office that could provide additional resources for her and her son if needed.
