Mass. researchers have developed a new way to treat blood clots
A new blood clot treatment that combines nanotechnology and medicine is being developed by researchers at the Wyss Institute at Harvard and the New England Center for Stroke Research at the University of Massachusetts.
The injected drug clings to the build up causing the clot to dissolve it, but this method only works where there is a complete vascular blockage according to the Harvard Gazette. The new method of treatment involves using a stent to create a narrow passage to restore some blood flow. Then the drug can attach to the clot and begin to dissolve it, explains the Gazette.
The study will appear in the December issue of Stroke.
