Billerica officer facing assault and battery charges, possible termination

A Billerica police officer, accused of assaulting a man at the Billerica Elks Club while off duty in June 2013, has been charged and is facing possible termination, according his department.

John Hickey, 47, was charged Thursday with assault and battery as well as assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (shod foot), police said. Hickey allegedly assaulted the man by kicking him or stomping on him.

Hickey has worked for the Billerica Police Department for 19 years, but was placed on administrative leave earlier this year when police became aware of the allegations and began to investigate, police said. In addition to the criminal charges against him, Hickey also faces administrative charges and will be fired from the force if found guilty, according to police.

“These allegations, if true, represent a violation of the public trust,’’ Billerica Police Chief Daniel Rosa said. “This alleged behavior is not what we expect from our public servants. We strive every day to earn the public’s trust, and this case was referred to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office when we learned of it.’’
