Stoneham officer helps save a life, deliver a baby in less than a week

A Stoneham police officer had a productive week at work, to say the least.

Officer Sheryl Rotondi was praised by Stoneham’s chief of police, James McIntyre, on Monday for her response to two medical calls this month, helping save a life and welcoming another.

Rotondi was in the dispatch area of her station in between shifts on Oct. 15 when a man ran in looking for help. He said that someone had collapsed in the basement of the Congregational Church across the street.

Rotondi immediately responded, finding an unresponsive 47-year-old man on the church floor, according to police. Police said Rotondi initiated CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene. The man was brought to the local hospital, and doctors credited the officer in helping to save the man’s life, police said.

Only five days later, Rotondi responded to a motorist whose wife was in labor and would not make it to the hospital. She assisted with the delivery as the baby was born in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, according to police.

“I did what any of our other officers would have done in the same situation,’’ Rotondi said in the press release. “Most importantly, both events worked out well for everyone involved.’’
