Proposed bill would keep police officer conduct out of public records requests
State Rep. Nick Collins of Boston wants internal police investigations kept private until “a finding has been made.’’
It’s no secret that Massachusetts has one of the weakest public records laws in the country. Peter Kocot of Northhampton wants to change that with a public records reform bill due out soon. In contrast, State Rep. Nick Collins of Boston has proposed a bill that encourages less transparency, reports Boston magazine.
The bill, which is currently before the Judiciary Committee, aims to keep any investigation into a police officer’s conduct that could result in disciplinary action from public records requests.
Collins wants to keep internal police investigations private until “the investigation is complete and a finding has been made,’’ he said in a statement to Boston magazine.
Collins’ bill is expected to go to the House floor for a vote next year.
