Man convicted on federal charges for selling mixed heroin linked to deaths in Arlington

An Arlington man has been convicted on federal charges after police say he sold mixed heroin to two people who later overdosed and died in town.

Yrvens Bain, 42, was convicted by a federal jury in Boston’s U.S. District Court on Wednesday on the following charges: distribution of heroin, possession with the intent to distribute heroin, and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. His sentencing is scheduled for January 12; he faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison, according to Arlington Police.

Police say Bain sold heroin laced with the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl. He was arrested on April 1, 2014, and taken to a local hospital after swallowing heroin during his arrest. Police later searched his home and found a .45 caliber handgun with a destroyed serial number, 26 grams of heroin mixed with fentanyl, drug paraphernalia, and thousands of dollars in cash, authorities said.

Police described Bain as a “career criminal,’’ and said he had several past drug trafficking and firearms convictions.

“By working together, we can accomplish great things, and this case is a perfect example. A career criminal, who knowingly sold poison that directly led to the deaths of two people in Arlington, will now spend a significant amount of time in federal prison,’’ Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in a statement.
