Bridgewater State University Police will not file charges for an alleged sexual assault near campus earlier this week, saying that original report was “unfounded.’’

Earlier this week, police said a female student was sexually assaulted on Monday night near a campus parking garage.

University Vice President Paul Jean said in a statement that the alleged male suspect, who they described as an older 5-foot-10 white man with a deep voice, reached out to the 18-year-old through the social networking app Kik.

After communicating with the suspect, the student walked across campus to the parking garage, according to the university statement.

Jean thanked the police for resolving the case in a statement on Thursday morning.

“We regret any undue concern this matter may have caused our campus community and surrounding communities, although the safety of our community always needs to be our highest priority,’’ Jean said.
