Cambridge received dozens of applications Monday for a new lottery to provide affordable housing for families who earn as much as $118,200 a year, The Boston Globe reports.

It’s all part of the city’s effort to reserve housing for the middle class.

“You have to have a pretty good income to be here without any assistance,’’ Housing Director Chris Cotter told the Globe. “We want to create options.’’

The applicants are vying for a spot at the Vivo Apartment Homes on Third Street, where rents for the reserved units will range from $1,996 to $2,439 for a two-bedroom apartment, compared to the market-rate units in the building, which rent for $3,229 to $4,364.
