Local Pearl Harbor survivor dies at 94

Edward Borucki Nancy Palmierie / The Boston Globe

Edward Borucki, one of the last Pearl Harbor survivors in the area, died at Solider’s Home in Holyoke Saturday, The Boston Globe reported. He was 94.

Borucki, who was born in Holyoke, joined the Navy in 1940 and was assigned to the USS Helena, according to the Globe. When the Japanese Navy attacked, he had just left the ship’s engine room, narrowly avoiding the first torpedo that struck it. He then helped other survivors until the ship arrived in California.

Borucki was discharged from the Navy in 1945, the Globe reported. He earned a master’s degree from Boston University and has spent the past few decades attending local patriotic events.
