Mark Wahlberg welcomes Pope Francis in Philadelphia, says ‘Go Eagles’
Speaking before the Pope Francis on Saturday, New England Patriots fan and noted Tom Brady hugger, Mark Wahlberg, gave his blessing to another NFL team.
The Dorchester native closed his introduction of former NFL running back and pastor Herb Lusk at a Philadelphia festival with, “Go Eagles.’’

Wahlberg — a devout Catholic who has said he goes to church daily — was speaking at the Festival of Families, an international celebration of family life that included speeches and musical performances. Pope Francis also addressed the crowd, as part of the penultimate day of his United States visit.
It perhaps shouldn’t be surprising, however, that Wahlberg has nice things to say about the Eagles, despite his New England roots. Even if it did feel like he left Patriots fans hanging.
Wahlberg starred in the 2006 movie Invincible, portraying the true story of Eagles wide reciever Vince Papale. In 2013, the actor also said that Philadelphia reminds him of Boston.
“Good people. Hardworking people. No nonsense. No BS. They tell you what they’re thinking, whether you ask them or not,’’ Wahlberg said.
Though, for the 0-2 Eagles, it may not have been Wahlberg’s words that they needed.
