This MIT student loves the MBTA so much, he made a real-time map for his room

Forget posters—this MIT student put the T on his wall.

Ian Reynolds, a junior at MIT, built a map of the MBTA using LED lights as a decoration for his bedroom, The Boston Globe reported. Using real-time updates from an MBTA feed that makes data available to third parties, Reynold’s map updates every 10 to 15 seconds, making certain lights blink to show the train’s current location.

But Reynolds didn’t build the map to help him catch trains. In fact, he said, it’s not very useful for that. Instead, he built it because he’s fascinated by public transportation.

“It’s hard to describe, but I feel like coming to Boston, the MBTA becomes a part of everybody’s life,’’ Reynolds told The Globe. “Our transit system has a lot of personality. It’s very, very integrated into the fabric of the city.’’
